wHAT IS ECOTHERAPY?

Ecotherapy is a nature-based approach to wellbeing that recognises something simple but profound: we are not separate from the natural world - and reconnecting with it can support balance, clarity, and emotional healing.

Rather than sitting indoors, ecotherapy brings gentle therapeutic conversation into natural spaces such as parks, woodland areas, and quiet walking routes across Shropshire.

The pace is slow.
The environment is grounding.
And the connection to nature becomes part of the therapeutic process.

How ecotherapy works

While there are many types of ecotherapy in the wider mental–health world, Inner Wild focuses on a gentle, accessible, relational approach:

  1. Nature becomes a co-therapist
The natural world offers calm, grounding, and a sense of spaciousness that can help untangle overwhelming thoughts and emotions.
  2. You set the pace
We walk slowly, find stillness when needed, and choose routes that feel comfortable and accessible.
  3. The session is centred on your experience
Nature provides a backdrop - not a performance. We use what’s around us (weather, sounds, textures, movement) to support reflection, grounding, and presence.
  4. Therapy happens organically
Conversation flows naturally alongside the landscape. For some, it feels easier to talk while walking, moving, and not making direct eye contact.
  5. Sessions can be one-to-one or small private groups
If group spaces aren’t available, you can still book a private outdoor session for yourself or a small group.

Benefits of ecotherapy

Ecotherapy supports wellbeing on multiple levels - emotional, physical, and relational.

  1. Grounding & Calm
Nature naturally helps settle the nervous system. The sounds, light, and movement around you can gently interrupt stress responses and bring you back into your body.
  2. Mindfulness & Presence
Outdoor sessions encourage you to slow down, notice your surroundings, and reconnect with the present moment - a powerful antidote to anxiety.
  3. Social Connection (Optional)
If you choose a group experience, nature can help ease social pressure and create a sense of shared belonging.
  4. Gentle Movement
Movement supports emotional processing. Walking side-by-side can make difficult conversations feel easier and more spacious.
  5. A Sense of Purpose & Perspective
Being in natural landscapes often brings a sense of meaning, gratitude, or clarity - helping you see your challenges from a kinder, wider viewpoint.

Is Ecotherapy For You?

Ecotherapy may be a good fit if you:

  • Feel calmer outdoors

  • Prefer movement over sitting still

  • Find traditional indoor counselling difficult

  • Want to feel more grounded and connected

  • Are seeking a gentle, nurturing approach

  • Love nature or want to reconnect with it

  • Enjoy space, fresh air, and less pressure

Ecotherapy can also be combined with indoor counselling
if you’d like a blended approach across multiple sessions.

A growing body of research now supports what many people feel instinctively: being outdoors is calming, regulating, and deeply restorative.

Clients often report that ecotherapy helps with:

  • Anxiety and spiralling thought cycles

  • Low mood or depression

  • Stress and overwhelm

  • Trauma-related symptoms

  • Burnout and fatigue

  • Feeling disconnected or “stuck”

  • Low confidence or self-esteem

  • Grief or big life transitions

Being outside can also help the body regulate more quickly - breathing slows, muscles soften, and the mind becomes less reactive.
